Canon BG-E7 Battery Grip for Canon Digital SLR Camera Feature

I bought this grip for my 7D.

For a while, this was permanantly attached to my camera as I travelled around.

I have recently removed the grip from my camera to try out a more photojounalistic approach to photography. Two words: Big difference.

Pros:

-Vertical shutter release is awesome and convinient.
-Doubled battery life.
-Makes camera look more expensive and professional-looking.
-Partially stabilizes video

Cons:

-Weight!
-Weight!!
-Weight!!!
-Vertical grip is thicker than the grip on the camera (I would of preferred both to be the same, just my own nag)
-To an extent, price.

I emphasize the weight a lot. The camera can take on a considerable weight simply by attaching a big lens, this grip (with the batteries) adds even more weight. Since removing the grip and rolling with just a lens attached, I found it to be a lot more lightweight, almost feathery in comparison.

Of course, its going right back on the camera when I’m going on a long trip or when I shoot video for a film or a client.

Also, the price is a little high and it doesnt even have a Canon logo on it (thats why I’m paying close to 0, right?). That money can get you a pretty decent fish eye lens, or the 50mm f/1.4. But if vertical shutter is important to you, I’m sure you’ll buy it regardless.

The battery grip is a good addition to your camera. But I wouldnt recommend keeping it on there at all times, especially if you shoot one-handed like I do, you’ll find yourself getting a work out on your right arm.

Great camera! Great battery life! Amazing features!

For anyone who is tentative about this camera b/c other reviewers claim that the features are lacking…put your reservations aside! I will say that the manual is a bit lacking–it does mention all of the features but it definitely doesn’t explain how to use them or the extent of their use as well as it could. So, you will need to devote some time to playing with the camera and the manual to figure out exactly what the camera can do and how to do it.

I will say that this is not a point and shoot camera…I mean, it does point and shoot exceptionally well! However, the artistic features of this camera is what really makes it spectacular! Sepia, B&W, single color, enhanced color, contrast, manual settings, etc.

Anyway, great camera!

I have experienced the G10 for almost a year now and I am surprised with the quality of taken pictures. The best thing you can carry it with you everywhere because it has very solid body and the battery lasts very long time (actually I have 3 batteries and I can take 100s of RAW photographs and video-shots a week without electricity. Quality of taken photographs is very good and you can edit the RAW files of pictures in Aperture by Apple without any problem. The only problem is increasing noise with ISO 400 and higher. The camera is actually not usable over ISO 800. But with the full manual control I take night-pictures with ISO 80-200 with long time of exposure, but you need tripod and usually statical objects to photograph.

I previously owned the version I (v.1) of this lens for almost 2 years. While v.1 had amazed me during my ownership, with IS, with speed, with color, with bokeh…..it does not come close to this new mk2 (v.2) version by any means. I am glad I sold v.1 for 1750 and received 1550 in cash after all fees was deducted (2months ago). Here is why:

Mk2 PRO (vs Mk1):
1) Super sharp at all focal length even wide open at f2.8 (now those 70-200 F4 IS fan boys can’t complain about the lack of sharpness on the f2.8 big brother anymore). The shorter minimum focusing distance (mfd) makes this lens even more usable indoor.
2) The focusing speed feels more responsive and accurate. It is also quieter, almost inaudible.
3) IS is truly improved. Although a tiny bit heavier, I still manage to take sharp pics with shutter as slow as 1/15 of a second handheld. (You can put the mk1 on a tripod, and the pic you take with mk1 will always be softer than my mk2 handheld, especially at 200mm)
4) Fluorite element: this is not a gimmick, and the reason it is inside all the larger L white lenses. It really controls light better so images doesn’t appear washed out or have unwanted light under extremely bright situation.

CONS:
Price? (Before you own the lens price can be a CONS. Once you use it, it will be a non issue with regards to value/performance ration). Just think about having one zoom from 70mm~200mm that gives you sharp picture wide open through out, that easily translates to 3 to 4 prime lenses (to offer the same sharpness at each focal length)…then think how much you would have to pay for those lenses and how much they would weight together, and how much time you will waste swapping lenses, while with this lens you just turn the focusing ring, shoot, and smile ^_^.

I will post some pictures later on, but so far I am totally satisfied as you probably have seen from other owners. If you can afford to spend the extra 7~800 for this zoom range you need or have always wanted, I guarantee you will not have any remorse. Thank you for reading!

UPDATE:
Still impressed with 70-200 f2.8L IS mkII. Although 200mm f2L is faster and sharper, better bokeh, color saturation…it does not replace this zoom, due to fixed focal length and weight. I really like the flexibility of this zoom, with it’s ultra sharp results and excellent color. This lens will be in my bag permanently, along with 100mm macro, and my 17-55mm (my next zoom lens will be 24-70 2.8L…so I have full coverage from 11mm~200mm all at f2.8) You will not be disappointed I promise.

I got this because I’m a starting photographer, along with the 50mm this camera is insane. I liked the controls on the olympus e-520 a little better, but got the hang of this. Don’t like that the scroll wheel is next to the shutter button, if it were like the Nikon or the Olympus where you can scroll with your thumb i think it would be faster to change speed & aperture. noticed the LCD screen is clearer than the olympus, but it seems sorta dim to me in daylight. i like that the anti-dust feature turns on when you shut it off to not slow down turn on time. portability obviously not good cuz its a big dslr, but i gave it 4 stars anyway because its lighter than my old film camera and just as solidly built. Grip was my main concern, not really comfy and doesn’t allow as firm a grip as nikon d3000 or olympus e520. those cameras feel like they were designed for the contours of your hand. Still, you could hold this with greasy hands, unlike those crappy slippery plasticky Pentax cameras that feel like those used up sweaty playstation controls at walmart. the buttons and layout of this camera remind me of the original xbox controller, it looks cool but when you try to use it its uncomfortable, sorta hurts, and you find that the shape of the buttons does not go well with the shape of your fingers or hand. I ultimately settled on this XS because Olympus has limited lenses, and i can’t afford any of them. The nikon d3000 although equally priced, has no live view or anti shake. regardless, im glad with my purchase, gave it 4 stars cuz it looks really cool but its actually kinda uncomfortable, the button layout once again focuses on aesthetics and looking cool, but could be more functional (thumb scroll wheel anyone?) it only uses SD cards so might be bad for ppl who want fast RAW photos. for JPEG though it is very fast. anti shake automatically turns on when you focus a picture. didn’t get the stock lens kit cuz i heard it sucks, but supposedly the newer IS version is way better than the old one, but i got the 50mm for this and it is crazy good. The fact that there are so many canon-fags out there kissing up to canon means i will find lots of used lenses for this. Anyway, respect to all cameras, they all have their ups and downs, but ultimately the canon had the most features for me, and lots of lenses means i can luckily find a cheap used one.
