  • 2.5-inch LCD display with 140-degree viewing angle
  • Bright Capture technology; 26 selectable shooting modes

I have used this camera in a variety of situations and it doesn’t disappoint. The pictures are clear, the zoom capability is a real advantage over the normal 3X optical zoom, and the closeups are awesome. Took pictures in the near-dark of historic potato houses and it brought these musty rooms to life. I could see in the picture what my eyes couldn’t see, without glare or unnatural looking light. I put the case on my belt, let the sweater hang over and can draw it out like a pistol. So different from the SLR days when tourist was written all over me. Also my blow-ups have been very clear, at least to 11×14. The only problem is the wash-out on the screen in a bright, sunny day. I learned to compensate for that by holding the camera away from my body and aiming under those conditions. Works about 80% of the time. One usually tries to avoid the sun anyway

I bought this camera refurbished about 2 years ago, and it’s still working good as new. This camera can go just about anywhere. I’ve taken it on a waterfall rappelling trip in Costa Rica, to hot springs, other places where there’s a good chance of being splashed (like on boating trips, or sightseeing near waterfalls), to dog beach, in the snow, etc. Plus when I’m on vacation, I can take pictures outside even if it’s raining now (this was one of the main reasons I wanted a waterproof camera). I also take it places where there’s a good chance of getting dirty, like a dog park with dusty dirt that gets everywhere (and dogs that seem to particularly enjoy licking camera lenses for some reason), or on the sand at a beach. When this camera gets dirty, you can just hold it under running water to clean it. The water evaporates off the lens nicely, with no spots. I can also keep this camera in my purse all the time without worrying about damaging it. I don’t have to be careful, I know the camera is going to be ok in there even if I drop my purse or bang it into something.

The picture quality isn’t the best ever in all lighting conditions (although it’s about what I would expect from a mid-range compact camera), but the camera makes up for it by being able to go places that other cameras can not go. Photoshop autofixes generally fix the image quality enough to make me happy. Even unaltered, the pictures are mostly acceptable. I will upload some un-altered photos as soon as I get around to it.

It has so far proven to be a very durable camera. I do use a case for it most of the time (especially when it’s in my purse), and I actually read the manual regarding care, and follow the care instructions to make sure it stays waterproof — for example, I always inspect the rubber seals around all the doors (especially the battery/memory card door which I open all the time) before going underwater. No issues at all yet.

I have no complaints about battery life. I don’t know how it would do if I’d used it as my primary camera on vacation, but one battery lasted about a week with limited use (basically any time it was raining, in any situation that would make me worry about my other camera). Possibly longer, I’m not sure.

I can’t really comment on the scene modes, I usually just use the “P” mode. There are just too many scene modes and I don’t want to have to keep figuring out which is the right one to use. I’ve tested a few just for fun, but I haven’t really done any comparisons between modes.

It was annoying having to have to buy an xD card when everything else I have uses sd. I never actually plugged the camera into my computer so I’m not sure what the data transfer speed is when used that way.. I use memory card readers, and even my old regular speed sd cards seem a lot faster than this xd card (which is an Olympus 2gb card). Formatting the card on the camera also seems to take forever, but maybe I am just impatient.

I can’t think of anything else to say about it right now. Overall I’m pretty happy with it.

Olympus SP-590UZ 12MP Digital Camera with 26X Wide Angle Optical Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD Review

  • 26x wide-angle optical dual image stabilized zoom
  • Pre-capture scene modes: Multiple Exposure, Soft Background Focus and Beauty Mode
  • 2.7-inch Advanced HyperCrystal III LCD screen
  • Compatible with xD Picture Cards and microSD memory cards (not included)

I have had this camera for about three months now and have had a chance to take photographs in many different situations. Olympus is currently the leader in the ultra-zoom compact digital market. (I don’t like to call these cameras point-and-shoot, because the features are as advanced as many SLR cameras.) In my opinion, this is one of the most versatile compact digital cameras available right now, although it does have its drawbacks. Here are the pros and cons of this model:

Pros:
The lens range. The ultra-zoom lens is the main feature of this camera and the reason most people are considering this model. It has an effective zoom of 26-626mm, which is the largest range of any zoom I have ever used. I don’t know of any SLR lenses that have such a wide zoom range. Plus the 5x digital zoom increases the effective focal length to a ridiculous 3130mm. It is generally inadvisable to use digital zoom, however I used it for a moon shot and got excellent results (see my photo under customer images) so don’t fully discount this feature. In addition, the lens is relatively light and only extends out 2.5″ at maximum magnification. And it does all this with a relatively fast f/2.8.

Controls. This camera has all the controls of a full-featured camera, from fully automatic to manual control of just about everything. I won’t run down all the different settings, but it has shutter speed ranging from 1/2000 second to 15 seconds, and ISO from 64 to 6400. It has two macro modes for extreme close-up photography and several modes of auto-focus as well as full manual focus. This makes it very versatile for both the novice and experienced photographer.

Image Size. 12 megapixels is at the high end of compact digital cameras. The images at full resolution are huge, large enough to be printed at 11 x 17. I mostly display my images on screen so the advantage for me is that they can be re-sized to increase sharpness and reduce noise. (Pushing the size to 12 megapixels does seem to introduce more noise in the image.)

Viewfinder. It has a very large 2.7″ LCD viewer as well as a true viewfinder (something many compact digitals are doing away with these days).

Menu. The Menu is pretty straightforward, there aren’t multiple levels to have to bury through.

Image Quality. The image quality is quite good, particularly at ISO 64 and in the wide and mid-range of the lens. Sharpness leaves something to be desired, however, and drops off noticeably at the long end of the zoom (see cons).

Ease of use. The camera does not have a steep learning curve, and feels good in the hand. The controls are not all that complicated, especially for an experienced photographer graduating from an earlier model (I am moving up from an Olympus C-5050 Zoom and this camera is a joy to use by comparison.)

Flash. I am not a fan of most images produced with a built-in flash, however the flash is decent, produces more natural colors than my previous C-5050 and I like the fact that the flash is never engaged unless it is popped up.

New Modes. This camera has some new modes such as Beauty Mode and 14 different scene modes. Being an experienced photographer I like to have control of the way the camera shoots, so I probably won’t use these much, and can’t give an opinion of them except that the Beauty Mode does do a nice job of softening face wrinkles.

Cons:
Lens sharpness. This zoom lens is a joy to use however the images it produces are not nearly as sharp and clear as I would like. Of course when you pay under 0 for the entire camera, there has to be some trade-offs in the optics. This built-in lens is never going to rival any of the high-end SLR glass from Canon or Nikon. The lens is not crisply sharp at any focal length: at the wide end there is noticeable softening of the image around the edges; the lens performs pretty well in the low to mid-range of the zoom but image quality at the far end of the zoom is equivalent to a cheap telephoto, with quite a bit of chromatic aberration. These imperfections can be compensated for my shooting at the full 12mp and then reducing the image size in Photoshop. Then sharpening must be performed to make the images look good. You can get some really great shots, just don’t expect full professional quality with this lens.

Noise. The noise levels are a lot worse than I would like, beginning at ISO 200. ISO 400 is pretty poor, and starting at ISO 800 the images are really unacceptable in my opinion. ISO 1600 is just terrible, but for some reason the image quality improves at ISO 3200. I had hoped for better low-light performance with this camera, so don’t buy it if that is your goal or else stick with the flash when shooting indoors.

Quick Menu. Although the menu is greatly improved over my C-5050, the quick menu seems to be lacking. I wish more of the controls were easily accessable, particularly exposure compensation +/-. My previous Olympus had a dedicated button for that.

No RAW mode. It really bothers me that camera manufacturers are leaving RAW mode out of the newer cameras. I am sure that the image quality of this camera could be improved if the RAW versions of the photos were available. Image processing in a camera is never going to match what you can do with Photoshop. Casual users usually skip RAW, however I think they should keep RAW mode available for enthusiasts like myself. This is a high-end camera, it should have RAW mode!

Static LCD. The LCD doesn’t pivot or move in any way. My old C-5050 had a pivoting LCD and I’m disappointed they didn’t retain this feature. It comes in handy in tight spots.

Movie Mode. It’s only standard resolution but the videos look very good so that’s not really a con for me.

Conclusions: This is a highly versatile and fun to use camera, particularly the zoom. Although the lack of sharpness in the optics was a disappointment initially, when the images are re-sized and sharpened they can be quite spectacular. I have impressed my friends and family with the images I have obtained with this camera, particularly the macro and long shots. (Please see the photos I uploaded for examples; my descriptions all end with my initials, DJS.)

Although these are not professional grade optics or sensor, the SP-590UZ is a great piece of equipment for the price. It’s a take-anywhere-do-anything camera. I’m finding it a pleasure to use and I highly recommend it for all outdoor hobbyist type of shooting, where it excels preferably at ISO 64 or ISO 100, or indoors with a flash. Look elsewhere if your shooing situations are primarily indoors and/or low-light situations.

Final note: Olympus came out with an even longer 30x zoom, the [Olympus SP-800UZ 14MP Digital Camera with 30x Wide Angle Dual Image Stabilized Zoom and 3.0 inch LCD]. But they dumbed it down with exposure control being strictly automatic and there is no viewfinder. As opposed to this camera, it’s a true point-and-shoot.

  • 4x wide-angle optical zoom
  • AF tracking; Intelligent Auto
  • Advanced Face Detection and Creative Art Filters
  • Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)

Just purchased this for my daughter’s birthday. We have used many other point and shoots and this is the worst. The pics are very grainy and blurry. We tried many different settings and nothing helped. I took an equivalent pic with my Canon point and shoot (2 less megapixels) and that photo was perfect. The one taken with this Olympus was horrible. I just printed the return info to send this back. Maybe we just got a dud but I wasn’t going to take that chance. I think I’ll just go to the store and get something else.

Olympus FE-5020 12MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Dark Grey) Review

Olympus FE-5020 12MP Digital Camera with 5x Wide Angle Optical Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Dark Grey) Feature

  • 12-megapixel resolution for photo-quality prints up to 20 x 30 inches
  • 5x wide-angle optical zoom; 2.7-inch LCD
  • Capture images to xD-Picture Card or microSD (not included)

I really love the Olympus FE-5020. It produces very acceptable images for this price range. Olympus is a brand you can rely upon. I also own an Olympus Stylus 500 which I bought 5 years ago and it has produced many great images.

I see that the two previous reviewers here have decided to return their cameras. Don’t let that turn you off this camera. I am very fussy about picture quality. I was a professional photographer for 20 years before I left the business. Sure, there will always be cameras that take better pictures, but for this price range you won’t go wrong.

The thing about this camera that really appealed to me is the 24mm lens. I also own a Panasonic FZ28 and a Sony HX1, and while they are both superb cameras, they only go down to 28mm on the wide end of the zoom. The Olympus FE-5020 nicely fills that gap. Another thing I love about the FE-5020 is it’s compact size. It fits in my jacket pocket and will go with me everywhere. That’s a bonus because you can’t take photographs when the camera is sitting home because you didn’t feel like lugging it around.

I don’t find the controls too small. I’m a guy with large hands and have severe carpal tunnel syndrome but I manage nicely in navagating the camera settings.

It is true that you will probably need to manipulate the photographs on a computer. I believe that the beauty of digital photography is the ability to work on a computer rather than breathing the toxic fumes of a darkroom. To me, digital photography is 50% camera work and 50% computer enhancement. If you’re not onboard with this, you may want to look elsewhere. The images I enhance on the compter are great. You can either use Picasa which is free or the Olympic Master software included with the camera. I start out with Photoshop Elements 6, enhancing contrast and color saturation.

I opted for the dark gray FE-5020 because I’m old school and think a camera should only be one color–black. I was happy to discover that the dark gray is actually closer to a dark navy blue so I got pretty close to having a black camera.

The neopryne Olympus camera pouch advertised by Amazon fits the camera beautifully and is very nice. I’m going to order another Lithium battery because I’m running it down in about 2 hours of shooting. It would probably last most people longer than that, but I’m always checking each image, zooming in and out of the captured image which really eats up power. I also walk around with the camera powered up when I prowling for shots.

I hope this information is helpful to anyone interested in the camera. I’ve had mine for about 5 days and just love it. I will try to post a photograph in Customer Images, but I’ve tried this before and my pictures exceed the size they allow you to post.

Enjoy your image making. I hope you enjoy photography as much as I do.

I bought this camera after my daughter lost my Sony CyberShot. I was upset when she lost it because, not only was it expensive but I had really liked that camera. Yet, when replacing the Sony, I didn’t want to pay that sizable amount again so I starting looking at other options. I liked the looks of the Olympus and the price was reasonable. It seemed to have the same features as the Sony and long ago I had an Olympus camera that had been a good quality camera.

This Olympus camera, I just love. It is as easy if not easier to use as the Sony. For the first “outing” with the Olympus, we went to Universal Studios in Burbank, California. The group consisted of five females and if you have ever been with a group of women that size or larger, then you know that we will all go in different directions all at once. So a lot of the pictures I took were on the run holding the camera up in the air. I would hold the camera at almost arm-length away and looking at the display to make sure my aim was decent enough to get the picture I wanted within the frame. Then I would just press the little button on top.

Even with running and jiggling the camera, all the picture came out clear. None of them were blurry or out of focus. And the color quality is vivid and crisp. It is amazing that such a little camera at a low to moderate price would take such great pictures. I actually think it is better than the Sony. It is the most user friendly, point and shoot camera I have ever owned. I highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for that style of digital camera

Olympus C7AU AC Adapter for Olympus Digital Cameras Review

Only remove the Memory Card in you camera when you have to as their is a finite amount insertions and removals specified in the lifetime of any Memory card, not to mention it could be forgotten in the reader and or damaged while outside the reader or camera.

Purchasing the AC Adapter C7AU was one of the best puchases I have made as I have two Olympus Digital Cameras, the C4040UZ and my newer model SP570UZ (Absolutely love both of them) but downloading pictures drains the batteries quickly and sometimes I have forgotten to turn the camera off after downloading resulting in lost shot opportunities.

It is absolutely a Must have item and Amazon’s vendor price was much less expensive than purchasing directly from Olympus.

Thanks Amazon for the excellent service.Olympus C7AU AC Adapter for Olympus Digital Cameras

Olympus FE-310 8MP Digital Camera with 5x Optical Zoom (Silver) Review

I also bought this camera and experienced poor battery life. After reading the reviews I was ready to box it up and ship it back. At the last minute I decided to give it another try and work the batterys. I bought 2 each of every battery that said digital camera. I also measured the short circuit current of each type of battery. What I found is this camera (and every camera that uses AA’s) needs high current NOT high capacity. The flash is essentially a dead short. When the engineers built the bigger zoom (5X) they made the flash bigger. The bigger flash it put a hugh load on the batterys. The best batterys that I found were the Hybrios (new style NiMh that holds it charge for a year another benefit). The Sony high current also worked. When I tested it with fresh charged batterys I gave up after 80 consecutive forced flashs in a row and I got tired of testing. Previously I could get about ten flashes before the batterys failed. This included alkaline as they do not like being shorted. So bottom line is you need about 8 amps short circuit current to make the camera live. Six amps short circuit does not work and the age of the cells counts for a lot. I have tried these cells in a DSLR with the same results they last a long time.
