Panasonic DMW-LVF1 External Live Viewfinder for Panasonic GF1 Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Camera Review

Panasonic DMW-LVF1 External Live Viewfinder for Panasonic GF1 Micro Four Thirds Interchangeable Lens Camera Feature

  • External optical glass viewfinder alternative to the LCD
  • Mounts into the hot shoe on top of the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1 digital camera
  • Conserves battery power by allowing the LCD to be turned off while providing a viewing and compositional aid

This is an item that might stay in your bag and not on the camera much of the time. That is, if your shooting where there is shade to shade the screen of your camera. But when you need this, you really need this. I bought my GF1 because I only shoot in RAW, and I don’t worry about JPEG. I shoot in RAW, because I sell my work to magazines, and I need the best file out of the camera that I can get. Lots of the time, I am shooting where the sun isn’t directly on the screen on the back of the camera, and so I don’t need the LVF1, but when you move to direct sun light, then you really are going to need this. Works great, and you could keep it mounted on the camera if you wanted to. There is a button on the side of the viewfinder that when you push, it moves between the camera screen or the LVF1 being what you view with. What that means, if that you don’t need to remove it to use the screen on the camera.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver) Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS5 12.1 MP Digital Camera with 12x Optical Image Stabilized Zoom with 2.7-Inch LCD (Silver) Feature

  • 12.1-megapixel effective recording
  • 12X optical zoom
  • 2-11/16″ LCD screen
  • Optical image stabilization
  • Sonic Speed AF for quick focusing on moving subjects

After a long time contemplating buying the ZS3 I finally decided to wait and see what Panasonic would have for us in the 2010 line up. And so far I’m very glad I waited.

The ZS1 and ZS3 were Panasonic’s high zoom compact cameras last year, and both of them receive great reviews. I’ve had a chance on several occasions to play with 2 different ZS3’s that belong to friends, and this was initially the camera I was going to get being very impressed with it’s performance. However, by the time I was ready to buy, the new ZS5 and ZS7 (to replace ZS1 and ZS3 respectively) were on the markets. And to my surprise, the ZS5 with several upgraded features was significantly cheaper than it’s predecessors.

A few things I noticed right away comparing my new ZS5 to my friend’s ZS3:

-First, physically the ZS5 has a smaller screen than the ZS3. The screen however is still sharp and clear, and perfectly usable. After a few minutes I don’t even notice the difference.

-The ZS5 can zoom while recording a movie, something that my friends ZS3 can not do.

-The ZS5 image stabilization is just amazing, and seems to be much better than the ZS3. Especially noticeable at the higher zooms while recording video.

-The ZS5 now has manual controls, something the ZS3 does not have. For me, even as a complete amateur, this is a huge benefit, and the single largest upgrade over the ZS3.

-The ZS5 has a one touch zoom button on the back in addition to the normal zoom control on top. This button with one press takes you from zoomed out, to full optical zoom, then full digital zoom, then returns to zoomed out. Not a big feature but something I can see being handy from time to time.

-The ZS5 no longer has the dedicated movie record button on the back, but rather an option on the selection dial on the top, similar to other cameras I have used, and what I personally prefer.

-The ZS5 has an exposure button on the back. While in manual modes pressing this button activates the directional buttons below it to act as the adjustments to your various manual settings. I think this is a clean and easy way to get control over settings and better than other setups I’ve seen in compact digitals with manual settings, where you often have to navigate menus to find the settings.

-Overall the ZS5 construction feels very solid, the lens action is smooth and quite, and the buttons have the high quality feel, just like the ZS3. Perhaps the main difference being the ZS5 has a slightly stiffer mode selection wheel, while the ZS3 mode selection wheel would often be moved just by removing it from your pocket.

Now to compare the ZS5 to it’s bigger brother the ZS7.

From my research (not experience) the main differences are the 7 has the larger screen, on board GPS, and a slightly different image processor. For me, these first two differences actually benefit the 5 over the 7, giving it longer battery life simply because it doesn’t use power on the GPS or the larger screen. The image processor might be an advantage to the 7 though, with some reviews that I have seen especially emphasizing better low light video quality on the 7. I’ve taken a few indoor and outdoor videos with the ZS5 and they seem very sharp and clear to me. Certainly the best I’ve had from a pocket digi camera, so without side by side comparison with the ZS7 it’s hard to discount the 5’s video quality.

Overall, this camera has exceeded my expectations in every way. I have owned 12 digital cameras, everything from ultra compact to DSLR. This camera by far has the most capability vs. portability of any camera I have owned. I’ve already taken about 300 pictures and several videos, color, contrast, and sharpness are all very impressive. I’m still on my first charge with an indicated 2/3 battery remaining.

The automatic mode works great and the auto focusing is the best I’ve seen outside of a DSLR. The focusing is so fast and accurate, combined with the quick turn on time and very short shutter lag time, this camera is the ‘quickest on the draw’ I have personally used.

This camera is like having my DSLR with a 25-300mm VR lens, combined with my high def video camera, all in a package I can slip in my shirt pocket. In any case I know I will have better results with my ZS5 than a DSLR or the video camera simply because I can have my ZS5 with me almost all the time, ready to get that perfect shot at a moments notice.

Amazing, and well worth the wait. 5 stars.

By the way the “Pelican 1010 Micro Case” fits this camera perfectly and makes a great water resistant/crush proof carrying case. Also highly recommended. Pelican 1010 Micro-Case (Black)

Panasonic DMW-BCE10 Replacement Li-ion Battery for Panasonic Lumix® Digital Cameras Review

Panasonic DMW-BCE10 Replacement Li-ion Battery for Panasonic Lumix® Digital Cameras Feature

  • 3.6v 1000 mAh Lithium-Ion Battery for Panasonic Lumix® Digital Cameras DMC: FX500, FX55, FX35, FX33, FX30, FS20, FS5 and FS3

There is not a lot to say about a battery. It works as expected, meets all the specifications that were provided. The main reason I wrote this review is to respond to other reviews that were listed when I purchased the product indicating that this product misrepresented itself. It was for the camera that is said it was for and I expect that those who had a problem did not review the specs of their camera closely. Pop it in charge and it performs like the original

Panasonic Network Camera and Pet Cam (BLC1A)

Posted by hdtv on April 25th, 2010

Panasonic Network Camera and Pet Cam (BLC1A) Review

Panasonic Network Camera and Pet Cam (BLC1A) Feature

  • Color Video
  • JPEG image compression & video streaming
  • Video Resolutions – 640 x 480, 320 x 240, 160 x 120
  • Frame Rates (Max.) – 7.5 fps @ 640 x 480; 15 fps @ 320 x 240; 15 fps @ 160 x 120
  • Authentication – ID/Password authentication (Administrator / General Users – up to 50)

Was able to set up the camera locally in no time at all. Turns out AT&T Uverse is a pain in the backside. I finally had to call into Panasonic support and they were great. Took about 15 minutes for them to walk me through a new setup. I had already spent 2 nights trying to configure the firewall on my own but they pointed out I had to change the setup in the camera as well.

To make this work you need to go to setup tab
choose static connection mode
change port number to 5000
for mine IP Address 192.168.1.253
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
default gateway 192.168.1.254
DNS server 1 192.168.1.254
DNS server 2 4.2.2.1

You will then need to go to the firewall of your router and setup an egress rule for the device using port 5000. This worked for me and I can now access the camera from anywhere.

I further setup up limited user access. For this you need to go to “administer” and choose “Do not permit access from guest users”

Then you go to “general user” tab and create the user account that you want to allow to access the camera. I set mine up to only allow “guests” to access the camera M-F 8a-6p. That was pretty easy to figure out as well.

Finally, if you want to buffer the images you can set that up on the “trigger” tab. I chose to just have it store the images in the camera at 1 per minute and get just over 4 hours that I can replay. I am playing with trying to get it to email tonight.

If you have AT&T then I hope these settings work for you. If not (or if you have any other problems) I highly advise you call Panasonic support before you give up. They are great and did not take too much time.

Update – 1-27-10
I struggled with the email settings for a while running multiple tests. Only after some time on the internet did I find an article detailing how to set up webcams to email. I found an excellent link[...]

However, if you are using [...], Yahoo you are probably out of luck b/c the camera does not support SSL login. My ISP is ATT and that defaults over to [...] so I am out of luck on both my accounts. Will poke around to see if I can find another way.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-inch LCD (Silver) Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-inch LCD (Silver) Feature

  • 12.1-megapixel resolution
  • 28mm wide-angle lens with 4.6x optical zoom; POWER O.I.S.
  • Capture HD video at 1280×720, 30fps
  • 2.7-inch TFT LCD screen
  • Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)

does what it is supposed to do. The camera is a little complicated, maybe too complicated for a shirt pocket camera. With all the bells and whistles on this thing, it is probably capable of higher quality photographs than it produced for me because I do not know how to select the right settings for this thing.

A few weeks ago, a friend and I compared several photographs, me with this and her with an Olympus she purchased at the airport in 2004. The sharpness and clarity of that camera was superior. Did I have the correct camera settings? Probably not. Would the Panasonic have outperformed a 6 year old camera had the correct settings been used? Who knows, because I never could figure out which settings those would be.

This Panasonic camera was the highest rated in the compact digital camera by Consumer’s Reports. It out performed the Kodak previously owned, and previously the rated highest by CR in the same catagory. All these cameras are complicated, and the general setting does not justify buying a new camera.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FP8 12.1MP Digital Camera with 4.6x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7-inch LCD (Silver) Overview

The foldable optics in this 28mm wide-angle lens with 4.6x optical zoom enables the FP8’s flat, slim design.Enjoy high-speed 0.95-second start-ups, AF speeds of approximately 0.3 second, and up to five consecutive shots at 2.3 frames per second with full resolution. You can also take up to 380 photos with a single battery charge (CIPA). This comfortable level of performance lets you capture even the most fleeting shutter chances.Simply switch to iA mode, and leave everything up to the camera. It automatically selects the best of six scene modes to match your subject, and corrects any blurring, focus or brightness problems, so you get beautiful photos every time. The back of the camera has cool-looking illuminated buttons that help you to avoid operating mistakes even when shooting in dimly lit places.

I rate this bag very highly. It is flexible and compact. I can still carry my camera in my pocket. The big advantage of a compact camera is that it is easy to have it always with you and if the case were too big too stiff and too bulky it would forfeit this big advantage. It could have been smaller for the FX37 but I appreciate the need to make bags with a wide application. Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 12.1MP Digital Camera with 8x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Blue) Review

Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZR1 12.1MP Digital Camera with 8x POWER Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Blue) Feature

  • 12.1-megapixel resolution
  • 25mm wide-angle Leica DC Vario-Elmar lens; 8x zoom, Power O.I.S.
  • Capture HD video at 1280×720, 30fps
  • 2.7-inch TFT LCD screen
  • Capture images to SD/SDHC memory cards (not included)

My wife has a Canon SD300 that is still quite serviceable but she often complained that it took too long to get the shot. After much searching, I found that the Lumix seemed to get good marks for “shutter lag”. Overall, the camera appears to be pretty nimble. It also has a gorgeous, big LCD display. Its ability to take HD movies (720p) and widescreen (16:9 aspect ratio) photos were also compelling purchase points.

I bought this camera knowing full well that there is some controversy regarding its latest firmware upgrade (1.2), which prevents the use of third party batteries. However, the camera came with firmware version 1.0, so I think I’m not affected. (I’m also not aware of any compelling reason to upgrade the firmware, thus far.) My only gripe is the lack of an external power jack. The battery can only be recharged outside of the camera in the supplied battery charger. Given how cheap the camera was for the features it provides, I can overlook that. I bought an 8GB memory card along with the camera to be able to make good use of its movie-taking capability. So far, I’m quite pleased with my purchase.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS1 12MP Digital Camera with 4.6x Wide Angle MEGA Optical Image Stabilized Zoom and 2.7 inch LCD (Silver) Review

This is a great camera that is very possibly the best I’ve owned. I buy new cameras every year just to stay on top of new technology and this one is a wonderful new product. Took it on my honeymoon to Hawaii and it definitely proved its worth. I took it with me to the beach, on hiking trips, ziplining, and even in the shark tank with me. This was an awesome companion to have that has excellent picture quality. The quick startup time and available burst shooting made it a great tool for those once over action shots. I did manage over 800 pictures in 2 weeks and probably only needed to charge it two or three times. The greatest feature is the super compact underwater. It has no moving external parts yet still has 4x optical zoom, very nice. Snorkeling was great as I just snapped at whatever I passed by with the camera tied to my wrist. Ziplining was a blast and this camera made the cut with great shot after great shot even though we ended up in 3 inches of rain in a few hours. And last but not least, the underwater feature was the greatest when I went to the Maui Ocean Center Shark Dive (Very Cool !) 30 minutes in a 20 ft tank with you and your closest marine friends like the hammerhead, tiger, reef, and tipped sharks recently captured from the ocean. Feeding the Eagle Ray was very cool. Anyways the pictures turned out great considering I was 10 ft over the max depth in a semi shaded environment with living sea life all around. Hope this helps.
PROS –
Very tough and compact for a waterproof camera (took to 20 ft several times)
Fast startup, zero shutter lag
Excellent tolerance to the elements (sand, snow, water)
burst shooting is a bonus
HD movies with seamless optical zoom while shooting
CONS-
hmm will have to get back with you
