This review is for the totally non-technical person. I have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to specifications, so I’ll write from that viewpoint.
I’ve had this camera for almost a year, and it has been my sole camera on several vacations and family events. Some friends were having a very tiny private wedding and asked me to take informal pictures before, and this is the camera I used. Overall, I’m pretty happy with it.
Pros:
Small
Lightweight
Clear photos
Minimal shutter delay
Cropped and blown up photos are still clear
Battery holds a charge for a good length of time.

Cons:
Low profile buttons on top of camera are TOO low.
Cost of Sony memory cards and extra battery!

I recently bought this camera and i really love it. Each pic that i take looks clear and detailed. Not sure if this cam is a Hight Definition camera, but i love how clear the pictures come out. The nice blue color is a tad darker than the image shown, but it still looks nice.

The only bad thing about his cam is that you cannot zoom in and out when you are recording a video, and there is no option to turn on the flash during recording. In addition, the videos that you record is clear when you recored something close but not far away. It records images that are far away a bit blurry.

As far as the battery, it doesn’t last that long and the charge time takes a little while. i would recommend buying a spare battery.

Over-all it is a great camera to have.

This is my first DSLR, and I am very happy with it. I was looking into getting the Sony Alpha 330, but after doing research I found the the 330 actually has less features(it is lacking a port for a shutter release remote, manual white balance adjustment, and less buttons that make key features much harder to change) and is just simply smaller. So the 300 is really the same as the 330 with more features, and if you do some shopping, much cheaper(in my case over 0). Overall the 300 is a great camera but does have its pros and cons as all cameras.

Pros:
Live View-the live view system that sony uses is probably the best live view system on the market as it does not pause to capture the image. I love the live view, it saves me a ton of time using manual settings messing with aperature and exposure. My girlfriend has a 200 and spends a lot of time playing with settings and taking test photos. The live view is also very nice if you have glasses as well.

Image stabilization in camera-This is very nice because you don’t have to shell out big bucks for image stablized lenses like with canon and nikon.

Uses Minolta Maxxim lenses-the ability to use Minolta Maxxim lenses means there is a ton of affordable used glass out there, many that are unchanged from the current sony offerings.

Takes good images-The 300 has a nice balance of speed and image quality.

Flip up/flip down lcd- Awesome feature that is usually only found in higher end cameras.

Cons:
High noise at ISO over 400- I won’t shoot at ISO over 400 because of the noise.

Smart teleconverter-This feature is a neat idea but is nothing more than digital zoom and degrades the image so you really can’t crop afterwards if you use this feature.

Lcd screen sticks out-The screen sticks out quite a bit when folded in, not a huge deal but will smudge from your face if you use the OFV, I would suggest the lcd screen protector made by sony so you don’t scratch the screen.

Overall the Sony 300 is a great camera for the money, you get a lot more for less money then you would with some other manufacturers offerings.

After reading some bad reviews about this camera i wasn’t sure if it’s good enough yet… i own Sony T100 that i got couple years ago (8Mpx camera) so i wasn’t sure if this camera is improved enough to replace my older Sony. After hesitation for couple of month i got it for my birthday from a friend. IF I KNEW HOW GREAT THIS CAMERA IS I WOULD BOUGHT IT LONG TIME AGO! this camera is unbelievable! My biggest issue with my older camera is that i never really used those special presets like beach/landscape/portrait/twilight/etc because it was sort of painful to go through menu and change it each time lighting conditions change, to say true for me those features in my old camera were totally useless. This camera – you just put it in auto (iSCN) mode (i put it in iSCN+ mode) and camera always takes dual shots when needed – example, i am shooting a person with a lot of back light, for example against a bright window – this camera will take two shots automatically, first shot is optimal settings as most cameras would set, then second shot with different settings – this is totally awesome because you can later pick what picture to keep and what picture looks good, most of the time i like them both!
Another great picture is smile shutter. i used to use timer on my older T100 to take pictures of me with my partner but then we had only 10 seconds to do that and after each shot i had to run back and put timer again and so on – quite annoying sometimes so i was researching cameras with remotes and found none. Guess what, you don’t need one with this camera – your smile is your remote! You can just put this camera on tripod or whatever surface and just smile… this camera will take picture each time you smile, doesn’t matter how many times you smile, once you select smile shutter it will keep taking all smiley pictures until you stop!!! this is absolutely fantastic feature!!! very very useful!
Another feature is that this camera automatically detects if you blinked in the camera (only works when face detected) so if you blinked it will take another shot right away automatically!

for me that was enough already, i was like a kid in a candy store but then i took it with me to a beach to test it more…
Picture quality – outstanding, brilliant colors, crisp and simply beautiful.

Video – i read a lot good reviews about the video quality but i didn’t expect it to be so crispy, smooth, vibrant and image stabilization quite surprised me – really really nice job Sony! WOW. i Own Sony’s new high-end HD camcorder so i like to film with perfect quality but this camera definitely can substitute my camcorder in some situations for sure.

Another fun feature – if you shot someone who doesn’t like to smile this camera can make them smile, seriously once you take a picture go to edit and add a smile! crazy!

anyway, if you are looking for a camera that would take really good shots and you like to press only one button (like me) then you may like this camera. I do like my pictures perfect but really cannot see myself changing settings every time i need to take a shot, i’d go crazy if i’d have to do that. I wanted a camera that will self adjust each time i take a shot, example – you are on a tour bus around paris and taking all kinds of shots, then going into cathedral and taking shots in much darker conditions without changing settings – i got all of this with this camera and then some!

Bad things about this camera –
1. battery life sucks so get more, i got 3 generic ones for less than each on amazon and they will be well used on my longer trips… I think this big LCD screen sucks all power from the batteries quickly.
2. In auto mode you cannot switch flash to Fill-In mode, the only two modes available are Auto and Off. I use flash/fill flash pretty much all the time, even on the sunny beach to make pictures look perfect without any hard shadows but now…

It’s interesting reading about this camera, as one of the W series for Sony, how they come in pink, black and silver and its MSRP is 9.

But can it take pix??

I had an old Kodak digital, a 2 mp (megapixel) job and the shutter was slow, the shutter lag was horrendous, and low light, forget it. “I’m sticking with film”, I said.

This Sony is impressive: A Carl Zeiss lens (top of the line German lens manufacturer), zoom control, “steady shot” capability for my nervous hands, a “smile shutter” to catch all those bright teeth, a 4X optical zoom, and can hit an ISO of 3200. Pretty impressive.

I use it a lot for short video clips but it’s certainly not a substitute for a video-cam. And when you shoot movies, it eats battery juice very quickly. So take that easy.

The menu and home controls are pretty intuitive, though it took me a while to translate how to run through a slide-show or show people the pix I had just taken. The Program mode is pretty fair, though the flash always wants to shoot at the most awkward times.

And recently, I found the Fireworks mode! With a tripod, great for those summertime fireworks shows.

You can also play your slideshow with a musical accompaniment, but I’m not sure if you can upload your own music or not. Not a feature I’m interested in.

So yes, it can take photos and take them well. No substitute for a sharp pro SLR camera, but great convenience for pocket or purse or when you want to go out without a pro camera pulling your shoulder down.

I can’t say enough about this camera. I took it to Europe and the quality of the pictures is amazing. The zoom is crystal clear. Its super easy to use, just point and shoot. The large screen is so nice to have. The size of the camera is small and slim, easy to put in a pocket or purse.

It was really nice to be able to protect my camera while on a cruise vacation with lots of water, but I noticed the cover would fog up when taking those shots just below the surface of the water. Overall it was a good purchase.
